Call from Homeland Security...

Postby crye-baby » Thu Sep 29, 2011 6:52 am

Ok guy's, This is the best info I can give on this type of situation. If you are contacted concerning an AN PEQ (anything) the BEST course of action is to work with them. Its not difficult & from the info in most cases you will get your money back. That beats the heck out of charges & the Total loss of your cash anyday

You know what this sounds like? A clever con job. The guy you purchased the unit from might have a friend. They waited till it was too late to be protected and then he had his friend contact you, so his friend probably gets a cut to help him scam you. If you were in possession of stolen property (as the guy said it isn't probably to avoid you doing something he doesn't want) the government would have sent people to your residence with a warrant to seize the property.

Don't be scared, it's your property as of now as you paid for it. Obviously this man that called you knows a LOT about everything going on--there's no way of being certain but this isn't the proper route of recovering stolen property. It's not voluntary at all. They will come to you with federal agents. You could be arrested, and questioned--but you'd be released since all you did was purchase goods that aren't clearly stated as stolen.

If you ship it off voluntarily, you'll be the sucker. That's all i'm saying about that.

The other reason this sounds shady, is because it's a fairly small amount of money. It's a small fortune to you, but to the government it's probably a write-off. The only way they would seriously pursue confiscating that equipment was if you purchased a large quantity of items or if it was a very high dollar item. Even in that case, agents wouldn't wait for the item to get sold, they would make a personal visit to the guy and take the item back, and place him in jail. They especially wouldn't wait that long. There is con job written all over this.

How about taking the matter to the police? Tell things how they are and let them sort it out for you, as it is their job anyway.

If he is legit, you should be able to find that out through police. They should be able to tell you if he has a case against you or not. If he is not legitimate, he will have cops on his tail in the process as an added bonus.

From all I can tell he is the real deal. Here is the adderss he wants me to ship to, Special Agent

Counter proliferation Investigations

Homeland Security Investigations

U.S. Department of Homeland Security

1000 2nd Ave, Suite 2300

Seattle, Washington 98104

Office: 206-442-1651

Fax: 206-442-2209
I left out any names or his email address. He seems to be an ICE Agent with HS. They tend to deal with things going out or into the USA mostly. Don't know how the peq 15 fits into that - maybe it really was in a Brittish companies hands first as he told me then this guy brought them into the US after they were done & sold them on ebay. He sold 3 or 4 total as I saw. Still I dont know if that gives me any protection or legal right to hold onto the device.

crye-baby,

Regardless of what the govt tells you, you will not get compensated for your device. This investigator guy may be legit, I Googled the address, and it is ICE as you say. In the future, never admit to anything in e-mail or phone messages (when they query why, tell them because you aren't seeing their credentials in person and it is also your right to remain silent); all is recorded . This forum is now evidence, they know your IP address, too. Dept HS can now monitor you legally because you are involved in an investigation. If they claim your device is mis-appropriated, then a search/seizure doc is in order. This kind of thing happens alot; some years ago a mfr sold M14 rifle receivers that did not comply with BATFE regs. BATFE contacted all owners, and one by one, seized them all in person. Nobody was compensated. The stinger here is if you say, "No, I do not have the device in question.", and are later found in possession, you are screwed. Say nothing more about this to anybody except a legal expert. Data plates fall off or wear away from devices, too. Make 'em prove it,
